Neeraj Sharma, DVM, PhD

Assistant Professor of Genetic Medicine

Assistant Professor of Genetic Medicine

Dr. Neeraj Sharma is an Assistant Professor in the McKusick-Nathans Department of Genetic Medicine. He studies splicing and mRNA stability to inform therapies for individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). Neeraj received his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Veterinary Sciences followed by PhD in genetics of cystic fibrosis from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. He completed postdoctoral fellowship under the mentorship of Prof. Garry Cutting in the McKusick-Nathans Department of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Sharma investigates modulator treatments for the recovery of CFTR function in both primary nasal cell and heterologous cell line models and he has developed expression minigene system to study functional effects of splicing and mRNA decay. Dr. Sharma employs RNA-sequencing technologies to identify specific molecular branches that could be inhibited to provide therapeutic avenues to treat CF and other genetic diseases caused by nonsense mutations.
